The Life of Your Dreams in 7 Steps

If your job and/or business is running your life, the creation and execution of a life plan will give you the control to convert your dreams into reality. I created a life plan as I came to the realization that my business had dictated my life for a decade. The day-to-day had consumed me and I hadn’t noticed. Each December, I would dream about how cool it would be to achieve certain goals the following year. The problem is these same goals would pop up in my mind, year after year, and I was never any closer to reaching them. I got tired of this lack of progress, so last year I decided to create a life plan that would bridge the gap between the reality I was living and the future I dreamed about.

Step #1: Dream

Write down all the goals floating in your head. Some may be new; others may have been around for years. Some may be personal; others business. Some may be long-term; others short-term. Some may be easy to accomplish; others may seem impossible. Some may require ongoing work as they are never complete (such as staying in shape); others may be one-time feats from your bucket list (such as visiting a particular place). Don’t hold back, take your time, and write them all down.

Step #2: Analyze

Write down all the roles you have (aka all the hats you wear). Go ahead and be specific. For example, instead of writing down “Family Man”, go ahead and write down “Son”, “Brother”, etc. The “Family Man” would be the main role, while “Son” and “Brother” would be sub-roles. In my life plan, I have 5 main roles with 19 sub-roles in total. Here are my main roles: Me, Family, Friends, Business, and Community. That’s right, don’t forget about number one – you!

Step #3: Connect

Connect all the goals with the appropriate sub-role. When doing this, it is best to set aside one sheet for each sub-role (as we will be adding more info later on). All sub-roles need to have at least one goal. If you need/want to create additional sub-roles and/or goals, go for it.

Step #4: Reflect

For each goal, write down the current reality. So far, you have been thinking about the future and now it is time to bring it back to today. The reality may not be very positive and that is completely ok; simply be honest with the assessment. This will allow you to get a better feel for the gaps between the life you live and the life you want.

Step #5: Prioritize

For each of the sub-roles, put a star next to the most important goal. Then, from these starred goals across all sub-roles, choose the 3 that you will focus on for the first quarter of 2016 (January through March). This will be tough because you will want to take them all on; let’s start with 3 and see how that works out for you.

Step #6: Execute

For each of these 3 goals, write down the steps that are required to reach them. These steps will form your Action Plan. Some of these goals may take longer than 3 months to achieve; however, it is imperative to visualize where you need to be on March 31, 2016 for these goals to eventually be met. For example, if you want to lose 25 pounds by Christmas 2016, maybe your goal is to lose 10 pounds by the end of the first quarter. (The initial pounds are the easiest to lose.)

Step #7: Monitor

Evaluate the progress of each of your 3 Action Plans at least once a month. Moreover, at the end of each quarter, you can move on to other goals if some have been reached or if you feel you can handle a couple more. Good luck in making 2016 the best year yet!
